Sail the Fleet
Wednesday July 30 - Sunday August 3, 2025
Leaders: Arista Holden, Abby Colby, Olivia Keene, Dylan Ladds
Cook: Phoebe Tucker
Camp together on Greens Island. Sail, row and enjoy a variety of traditional, distinctively rigged boats; designs from around the globe, with a community of other wooden boat enthusiasts. No prior boating experience necessary! Our fleet will include boats with dipping lug, square, lateen, sprit rigs, and possibly more!
Traditional boat designs have evolved over many centuries to better handle the demands of a specific fishery, or more efficient transport, and to stand against the constant strains of the ocean and coastal weather. Each rig and hull shape is tied to the bodies of water they worked. Each design represents a cultural ethos, too, of folk wisdom rising from initial scarcity, local ingenuity, and resourcefulness. Rowing and sailing these boats over a long weekend will allow us to tap more deeply into a spirit of collaboration, and of the diverse cultural backgrounds belonging to each boat.
Boats Include:
Bantry Bay gigs - 18th century French Naval Admiral's gig, dipping lug rigged yawl, with ten rowing stations
Åsfjord faering - Norwegian square sailed faering
Sognebåt - Norwegian row boat with a sprit rig
Bahama dinghy - Sailing dinghy with a leg o' mutton rig
Newfoundland skiff - Lug rig, design is out of Howard Chapelle's American Small Sailing Craft (1951)
Balancelle d'Espagnole - Mediterranean design, lateen rigged sailboat which was described in an essay, The Tremolino, by Joseph Conrad
