Slöjd and Boats
Sunday August 10 - Saturday August 16, 2025
Craft Specialist: Peter Lamb
Boating Leaders and Craft Assistants: Arista Holden and Dylan Ladds
Cook and Craft Assistant: Olivia Keene

Deepen your own partnership with Nature
by making objects using simple hand tools and from materials found in nature.
Slöjd is the Swedish word for handcraft which has an emphasis on learning how to use tools and work with materials, especially known for carving wood.

Our Slöjd projects will be the traditional Scandinavian birchbark salt box and canvas bags with decorative ropework. We'll learn and discuss together about other handcraft ideas, too. All tools and material will be supplied, although participants are encouraged to bring a small pocket knife, stout scissors and a notebook & pencil. We are working to assemble a basic kit of tools for purchase, too, if desired, to be available at the start of the program (more details to follow).

We will camp together on Greens island, and explore the surrounding waters in our Bantry Bay gigs under oars and sails. This program is designed for those who wish to be part of a community in learning traditional seamanship and craft making skills in a fun, supportive atmosphere. All meals, instruction, and safety equipment will be provided.

Typical Daily Schedule:

8am Breakfast, clean up
9:30am - 12:00pm – Craft

About Peter Lamb
Peter Lamb continues a lifetime journey of exploring handcraft and its
traditions that build community and define a sense of place. His pursuit has
taken him from being a museum curator, to a working craftsman to a
philanthropic advisor. He sees the power of story and handcraft as a way
for people to discover their own intimate connection to nature and find a
deeper meaning in their community. He likes the Swedish term “Slöjdare” to
describe his handiness with an ever growing range of handcraft materials.
He lives with his wife in Kittery Point, Maine in New England’s Piscataqua
maritime region.

Lamb is the co-creator of the international ‘Wille Sundqvist and Bill
Coperthwaite Slöjd Fellowship’ in partnership with North House Folk
School. He is member of the Maine Crafts Association and a past juried
member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen.

More about Peter from an interview
with Mortise and Tenon Magazine, July 2019.
