"The way to preserve small craft is...to get their reproductions out on the water, wear them out and replace them anew...Historical small craft are for the young and old and in between. They are to use and enjoy, and to pass on for future generations to use and enjoy, ad infinitum. Preservation through use, in the long run, that is the only way."–– John Gardner (1905-1995)

ABout Bantry Bay Gigs

Well-built, safe boats are essential for the health and function of our organization. A new gig will allow us to continue to maintain a healthy, thriving program and offer empowering experiences to hundreds of participants for decades to come. We need to add another gig to our aging fleet soon before our two others are too far in disrepair or need to be entirely rebuilt.

We're partnering with Lowell's Boatshop to build our new Bantry Bay gig in Amesbury, MA. Lowell’s is a working boat shop and museum, offering youth and adult woodworking, boatbuilding, and rowing programs. We wish to perpetuate traditional boatbuilding skills and inspire a new generation of young adult boatbuilders through this project at Lowell’s.
