Meet Oakley!
What are some of your favorite things about Greens Island? Greens Island is my happy place. I mentally return to my favorite places on the island to indulge my creative mind and escape the stresses of modern life. Greens is where I feel most at home. Have you had any other sailing/rowing experiences? Growing up on Greens Island I have been aboard boats for as long as I can remember. During high school and later on in college I was fortunate enough to sail the Caribbean aboard the tall ships Westward and Spirit of Massachusetts as far down as Trinidad and as far North as Maine. I also sailed the intercoastal waterway aboard a 30’ sloop during my senior year of high school. As a student I competed aboard six oared Cornish pilot gigs, winning the New England open water championship. Where do you currently live? I live on North Haven Island. My wife and I built our house here and now share it with our three and half year old twins, Tig and Wes and our loyal dog Finn. What are some things you do in your professional life or study beyond AC? I operate a charter business out of North Haven, taking folks on scenic tours of the islands and sharing the local history and flora and fauna. During the winter months I do tree work, as well as carpentry for North Haven Sustainable Housing and instruct wood working at the North Haven Community School. What are some of your hobbies? My hobbies include hiking, biking, treasure hunting, soccer, kayaking and dadding! If you could wake up with a new skill tomorrow, what would it be? I’d like to wake up able to surf big waves. I cannot imagine a greater, fully-in-the-moment thrill. What animal do you feel a kinship with? I feel a kinship with sea otters. I live my life between land and sea and always enjoy some good ol’ fashion play. Favorite meal/food? I love almost all seafood, but my favorites are halibut and scallops. Favorite song to sing while rowing? My favorite song to sing while rowing is “Haul Away Joe.” |
