Meet Tara!
What are some of your favorite things about being part of AC? The history of Atlantic Challenge is a story of deep connection—connection to people around the world, to these beautiful boats, and to the vast ocean itself. It offers a multi-faceted way of experiencing the art of both sailing and rowing, bringing new depths to the practice and camaraderie of the journey. Being part of the Atlantic Challenge has given me a unique sense of belonging, especially through the intimate atmosphere found on Greens Island. The Powderhole—a small, beautifully hand-crafted shack overlooking the water, and the energy shared here is something extraordinary. People of all ages and backgrounds come together, gathering on the island and on the boats, to sing, laugh, and share in the joy of this incredible experience. It's truly a full-soul adventure. Sailing & Rowing Experience: With many years of experience working with Outward Bound Schools and recently joining NOLS, I’ve been fortunate to gain extensive exposure to both sailing and flatwater canoe expeditions. I've had the privilege of sailing along the Maine coast and beyond with Morse Alpha Expeditions, where I’ve taught sailing and offshore passages. In 2022, I took part in the Race to Alaska, a remarkable 750-mile journey from Port Townsend, WA, to Ketchikan, Alaska, in a 23' gaff-rigged sailing canoe, the Bolger Light Schooner. The race primarily involved rowing, with just a touch of sailing, providing a unique challenge and adventure. Current Location: I currently divide my time between the East and West coasts, constantly on the lookout for new sailing opportunities and gigs. Professional Life Beyond the Atlantic Challenge: For the past few years, I’ve been working with a gap year semester program, taking students on international trips to explore cultural exchange and climate change impacts. This work has provided me the opportunity to travel across Europe, South Asia, and Central America, deepening my understanding of the world. Hobbies: Outside of sailing, I’m passionate about a variety of hands-on activities, including metalworking, sea kayaking, tennis, personal backpacking, interior painting, natural building, woodworking, and constantly honing new skills. If I Could Wake Up With a New Skill Tomorrow: I would love to be fluent in multiple languages, allowing me to connect with people from all over the world in a deeper way. Favorite Meal/Food: Pesto Pasta forever! Favorite Song to Sing While Rowing: Whatever Mia is singing! Kinship Animal: Male Peacock- , I appreciate the art of showing off one's colors and flaunting a bit of flair. There’s something empowering in embracing individuality and confidently displaying it to the world. |
