Downeast Foxfire Camp is a week-long rowing and sailing expedition in a 38 ft Bantry Bay gig. We will camp on the rugged, spruce-covered islands and peninsulas of Machiasport, Maine. 
All ages* and experience level welcome. 

August 17–25, 2018 
Training in:
Traditional seamanship: rowing, sailing, navigation, knots, tide, currents and the weather
Spoon carving and birch bark containers
hardwood lot and sustainable land management
Leave No Trace camp craft techniques

Why the name, Downeast Foxfire?
Downeast refers to the downwind and easterly direction schooners would sail from Boston along the Maine coast in the prevailing southwesterly winds. It is also a colloquial term for the eastern region of coastal Maine.

​Foxfire, the bio-luminescent light emitted by certain fungi on decaying timber, is a metaphor for our intention to preserve, celebrate and bring light to the folk traditions found on our coastline.

Sat. Aug. 18th ––– Passage to Cross Island. Camp on Cross.
Sun. Aug. 19th ––– Passage to Mill Pond. Camp at Dickinsons Reach
Mon. Aug. 20th ––– Birch bark container crafting and spoon carving. Camp at Dickinsons Reach.
Tues. Aug. 21st ––– Birch bark container crafting and spoon carving. Sustainable forestry. Camp at Dickinsons Reach.
Wed. Aug. 22nd ––– Passage to Lakeman Island. Camp on Lakeman.
Thurs. Aug. 23rd ––– Passage to Roque Island. Island Farming. Passage to Lakeman. Camp on Lakeman.
Fri. Aug. 24th ––– Passage to Machiasport. Sleep at Liberty Hall. 
Sat. Aug. 25th ––– Breakfast. Program ends in the morning, by 10am.
