Meet Edith!
What are some of your favorite things about being part of AC? Too many to count... I love the full immersion on the island, the disconnect from the digital world. I love the brilliance of teamwork and the challenge of hard work. I love when the wind catches the fore on a tack when we finally come through the wind. I love hanging on the halyard, watching the mast bend, but not too much. I love rowing in the early morning mist, while singing worksongs. I love the powderhole and all the little driftwood structures. I love how much I feel like the best version of myself during AC. When did you become involved with AC? In the summer of 2016, I was invited out to Greens Island to play some music and sing some worksongs with Bennett Konesni for a group of rowers who were training for an overseas competition. I knew next to nothing about the program until I stepped foot on Greens Island and met the team who would represent the USA that year. I instantly fell in love with the boats, the instructors, the island, the mission, the work -- all of it. It was an honor to bring music to an already magical scene, and I made the decision to join the team in 2018 for the competition in Ireland. In each subsequent year, I've been able to join as a trainer and I continue to relish the opportunity to learn about these boats, about the magic of teamwork and hard work, and delight and joy which is the real glue that makes these boats and spirts fly. Have you had any other sailing/rowing experience? I had some experience with rowing Cornish pilot gigs (6 oars, one cox, and a much lighter boat), but didn't have much sailing experience prior to the Bantry Bay gigs. Where do you currently live? I currently live on a houseboat in Pulpit Harbor on North Haven Island. What are some things you do in your professional life or study beyond AC? Architectural Designer & Graphic Designer, I'm currently the marketing manager at TimberHP -- an innovative new building products company making wood fiber insulation. What draws me to that work is a dedication towards developing real, achievable climate solutions through architecture and design. I also play music and make cool things out of metal! What are some of your hobbies? Soccer! I play year round on a few teams based in Midcoast Maine. If you could wake up with a new skill tomorrow, what would it be? To be able to play the upright bass like Esperanza Spalding and sing like Madison Cunningham. Is there an animal you feel a kinship with? Turtles. Favorite meal/food? Bahn Mi! or most Vietnamese food. Favorite song to sing while rowing? Black Slugs - probably. :p actually, ALL OF THEM! |
