Sloyd and Boats Expedition
Thursday July 7 - Sunday July 10, 2022
Deepen your own partnership with Nature by making objects using simple hand tools and from materials found in nature. The traditional Scandinavian birchbark salt box will be the focus of this workshop, along with birchbark simple knife sheath making. We'll learn and discuss together about other handcraft ideas, too. All tools and material will be supplied, although participants are encouraged to bring a small pocket knife, stout scissors and a notebook & pencil.
We will also camp together on Greens island, and explore the surrounding area in beautiful Penobscot Bay, Maine by way of an 18th-century Bantry Bay gig. This is an all-ages expedition designed for those who wish to be part of a community in learning traditional seamanship and craft making skills in a fun, supportive atmosphere. All meals will be provided.
Ages 15 and up. Starts and ends in Rockland, Maine. No prior experience necessary.
Group size limited to 11 participants plus instructors.
Instructors: Arista Holden, Olivia Carlson-Keene, Mia Bertelli Craft Specialist: Peter Lamb
